The diocese of Bytown was founded in 1847. In 1860, the name was changed to Diocese of Ottawa, and it became an archdiocese in 1886.

Currently, the archdiocese has 131 diocesan and 58 religious priests, 638 religious brothers and sisters, 71 permanent deacons and an ever-growing number of lay pastoral workers serving a multicultural Catholic population of close to 400,000 Catholics in 110 parishes and missions.
